This year I’ve started meditating. I have struggled to quiet my mind to meditate in earnest and while I do consider my runs in the forest and time spent making art as meditative, I wanted to try to sit in stillness. In February an old friend reached out asking if I’d like to join an online meditation group where we would meet once per week on zoom to meditate together. It wasn’t a large group, 11 people in total ended up committing and some were folks I’d known for over a decade and some I’d never met. These past few months of meditating as a group has had such a powerful impact on me and my personal meditation practice, where I now sit it quiet stillness for 10-20 minutes most days of the week.
I was inspired to create a drawing dedicated to this group of unique individuals who have helped me in my meditation journey. I asked each member to choose a plant - flower, tree, shrub, weed - that resonated with them and the result is this drawing, a botanical portrait of each member in my meditation group. In this drawing you will find: zinnia, aloe, pine, weeping willow, monstera, cedar, heal-all, orchid, cyclamen, fir, and schisandra.
