Domain III. Implementing Effective, Responsive Instruction and Assessment
III.1. You communicate effectively in a variety of teaching and learning contexts.
To show that I communicate effectively in a variety of teaching and learning contexts I have included an e-mail that I sent to my Art 1 students before Thanksgiving break. In the e-mail, I remind students of the assignments that are due over the weekend, when they are due, and that they have a limited time to make up any work if they were absent in the time that I was teaching. The e-mail also displays positivity and professionalism as a teacher.
III.2. You provide instruction that actively engages students in the learning process.
To show that I provide instruction that actively engages students in the learning process I have included a video I made to introduce a new technique on block printing. This video had a lot of success in engaging students because of the bright colors and music while also providing an opportunity to review on their own if necessary.
III.3. You incorporate the effective use of technology to plan, organize, deliver, and evaluate instruction for all students.
To show that I incorporate the effective use of technology to plan, organize, deliver, and evaluate instruction for all students I have included a lesson plan that I taught in a high school Art 1 class. This is a lesson plan for a process drawing and students documented their process by taking photos with their phone after each class and uploaded it to a GoogleDoc and wrote a reflection. This was a very successful way to integrate technology in the classroom because not only did it create a culture of daily reflection but also helped students document their process in a single document that they could add to and edit. Once the document was shared with me via my school e-mail, I could easily grade their reflections because all of the documents would update in real-time.
III.4. You are flexible when presented with an unanticipated event or situation and adapt your instruction based on ongoing assessment of student performance.
To show that I am flexible when presented with an unanticipated event or situation and adapt my instruction based on ongoing assessment of student performance I have included a photograph of a checklist I created for students in a high school Art 1 class who were absent for 2 periods while on a field trip to visit colleges. I adapted my instruction in order for students to make up the work they missed while still earning full credit by creating one reflection for all the steps rather than reflecting on each step of the process drawing. Students didn't do any less work than their peers, they just uploaded all their process photos at once rather than in separate reflections.
III.5. You provide students with timely feedback that is accurate, constructive, substantive and specific.
To show that I provide students with timely feedback that is accurate, constructive, substantive, and specific I have included a photograph of feedback I left in a high school student's sketchbook. I wrote their grades on separate sheets of paper and left a sticky note in each student's sketchbook replying to their reflections, noting successes, and encouraging them to continue practicing. This allowed me to give specific feedback to students that aren't communicated through a number grade and also allowed me to provide a high level of individualization for each student.
