Domain V: Engaging in Learner-Centered Content
V.1. You make content relevant to students’ “real world” and interests.
To show that I make content relevant to students' "real world" and interests I have included images of students drawing objects from touch while blindfolded in a high school Art 1 class. During this exercise, we talked about strengthening coordination and brain development which not only aids artists but also athletes, musicians, surgeons, and other professions. I also showed them a short video on artist Sargy Mann who went blind half-way through his painting career and continued painting by touch even after complete blindness. Putting the focus on the process of the exercise (rather than the product) helped students see the value of the lesson even if they have interests in something other than art.
V.2. You incorporate resources other than the textbook and/or standardized curriculum in order to enable students to make connections between content and real world, and make content relevant to students.
To show that I incorporate resources other than textbooks in order to enable students to make connections between content and real word I have included a slide presentation on Sculpture as Art I taught in a high school Sculpture 2 class. In the presentation, I used audio from the Museum of Modern Art and images from their archive to talk about conceptual sculpture, something that is not covered in the Texas curriculum.
